Torch-On Membrane
Waterproofing

Modified bitumen membrane systems — torch-applied for a fully bonded, monolithic waterproofing layer with exceptional durability on flat and low-slope surfaces.

Torch-on is one of the most proven membrane systems in New Zealand — a heat-applied bitumen layer that bonds fully to the substrate, eliminating the risk of moisture migration under the membrane.

What is torch-on membrane?

Modified bitumen — applied with heat for a permanent bond

Torch-on membrane is a modified bitumen waterproofing system applied using an open flame torch. The heat melts the underside of the membrane, bonding it directly to the primed substrate and creating a seamless, monolithic waterproofing layer with no air pockets or voids.

The modification of standard bitumen with SBS (Styrene Butadiene Styrene) polymers gives the membrane elasticity, improved low-temperature flexibility, and significantly better UV and fatigue resistance than standard bitumen products.

  • Torch-applied — fully bonded to substrate
  • SBS-modified for elasticity and fatigue resistance
  • No air gap — prevents moisture migration under membrane
  • Proven on flat roofs, decks and balconies
  • Excellent performance under foot traffic
  • Compatible with most concrete and timber substrates

System advantages

Why torch-on is the benchmark for flat roof waterproofing

01

Full substrate adhesion

The torch-application process melts the bitumen directly onto the primed substrate — creating a bond with no air gap. This eliminates the risk of water tracking laterally under the membrane from a single puncture point.

02

SBS-modified performance

SBS polymer modification transforms standard bitumen from a brittle material to an elastic one — better fatigue resistance under thermal cycling, better low-temperature flexibility, and a longer service life overall.

03

Established NZ track record

Torch-on bitumen systems have been installed on New Zealand roofs for decades. The performance in Auckland's UV and rainfall conditions is well documented — and replacement cycles are well understood.

Applications

Where torch-on is specified

Flat and low-slope roofs

The most common application — torch-on is the benchmark membrane for residential and commercial flat roofing across Auckland.

Concrete decks and balconies

Fully bonded to concrete substrates — performs well under foot traffic with the correct cap sheet specification and surface protection.

Remedial and re-roofing

Torch-on is a primary choice for re-roofing projects — the system is well understood and installation quality can be verified through the torching process itself.

FAQ

Torch-on membrane questions

SBS-modified torch-on membrane systems are designed for a 20–30 year service life when correctly installed on a properly prepared substrate. The quality of the torching process and seam overlaps are the primary determinants of longevity.

Yes. Torch-on installation is standard practice on occupied residential and commercial buildings across Auckland. We take appropriate precautions with the flame application and ensure adequate ventilation. The process is well-regulated and routinely performed safely.

In some cases, yes — particularly over existing torch-on or felt-based systems in sound condition. This depends on the existing membrane type, condition, and substrate. We assess this at the site visit and will only recommend overlay if it provides a genuine long-term solution.

Nuralite is a brand of torch-applied modified bitumen membrane manufactured in New Zealand. It is a torch-on membrane — one of the most well-known and widely used systems in the NZ market. AquaProof is a Nuralite approved applicator.
